Explore your creative neighbourhood. On the first weekend of October artists and crafts people across the borough of Lambeth will be opening their studio and work spaces to the public. Doors will be open from 10am to 6pm, 5th and 6th October and admission will be free.Dots will be added to our map as artists and makers sign up to this year's event. Lambeth Open showcases the fantastic range of creative talent tucked away in our borough and is a great way to discover the various art spaces too often hidden in your neighbourhoods. Visitors will be able to see inside the artist’s studios and exhibition spaces for a unique personal insight into the individual technical processes. This is your chance to sample our popular weekly coached sessions in this modern, six lane, 25 metre pool. As well as expert tution and advice from our professional coach, this is a chance to meet other fellow swimmers keen to improve their swimming technique. Perfect for new members, this relaxed swim event is a great way to experience our community and get a feel for our club. Capping our first Saturday, in the evening we're delighted to have stellar Big Band from South London Jazz Orchestra (Event #4) in St Faith's Church, North Dulwich from 7:30-9:30pm. SLJO is based in Brixton and play over thirty gigs a year all around London and further afield. The Orchestra was set up in 2000 and operates as part of South London Community Music, alongside concert band South London Symphonic Winds and choir London Sings! You can find SLJO at the London Marathon and up on the bandstands in three Royal Parks – Hyde Park, Regents Park, Greenwich Park – as well as their local favourite Ruskin Park. They love a good party! SLJO regularly plays the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Brighton Fringe Festival, and Wandsworth Arts Fringe. They’ve entertained both beer festivals and neighbourhood fetes. The Big Swing Band is based in Camberwell and has been entertaining audiences in the area and beyond since 1982. They play a mixture of classic, swing and modern big band charts including repertoire written especially for the band. They are led by alto saxophonist Alan English and have the standard 5-4-4-4 line up. This event (Fest Event #6) is one of our 3 first Sunday events and is organised and co-hosted by volunteer-run charity Friends of Ruskin Park. The Friends work to ensure the park (managed by Lambeth Council) is well cared for and maintained, and has a planned and healthy future. We traditionally wrap up Weekend #1 with a free entry Evensong, and this year we do again, but with a new approach. Our 8th event welcomes everyone along to St Faith's Church, North Dulwich to join the choir - just turn up on the day to learn the music all together at 6pm. The more the merrier! The Evensong service then proceeds from 7:30pm. Music will feature Wood’s rousing O Thou the Central Orb and Stanford’s famous Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Our special Festival Junior Open Mic Concert is a selection of 16 incredible grassroots under 18 acts who perform regularly at the legendary JOM Youth Open Mic. Pop, rap, jazz, indie, metal and punk will be showcased from covers to originals, solo artists to eight-piece bands. The Festival event will run from 12 noon till 6pm, and in two sections. “Buried British treasure, they deserve to be discovered” - The Independent Legendary UK & South London Alt Country, folk roots and Americana band Hank Dogs are finally set to release their long-awaited third album as they play HHMF in the wonderful surroundings of Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses. Their first two albums were produced by Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, John Martin, Fairport Convention...) The album will be on sale at the gig. Andy has been running The Easycome Acoustic Club in South London for over 30 years, it remains one of the longest running clubs in London. Hank Dogs - Andy Allan, Piano and Lily Ramona - started out at folk clubs in London in the early 1990s becoming a vital part of the British modern folk scene. In 1998 they went worlwide when Nick Drake's legendary producer Joe Boyd declared them the first British act he'd loved in 30 years. Their debut album ‘Bareback’ saw them touring the US with Joan Baez and winning fans with their quiet, haunting sound featuring ethereal vocal harmonies, strong traces of blues and Celtic music and Allan’s fluid acoustic finger-picking recalling UK folk guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Once again the popular Southwark Sinfonietta will close the Festival with a performance of classical music! This year's special guest is soprano Charlie Swann, who will sing 3 Mozart arias. The Sinfonietta is a local chamber orchestra conducted by Rupert Bond which gives three concerts a year. This autumn we will be celebrating the produce grown on site with a Harvest Festival. Join us on Sunday 27th October to mark the bounty of the season. Garden trails, kid’s activities, delicious dishes and even cocktails will all feature our edible garden! And live music from the wonderful SELFolk Orchestra will get your toes tapping! Discover what we grow and what can be made with it. From tasty pickles and preserves, warming comfort food and refreshing drinks, you will have the opportunity to try and buy. Halloween at Brixton Windmill Sunday 27 October, 1pm to 4pm Join us for a free family Halloween event in Windmill Gardens: Lantern carving workshop – make a traditional pumpkin lantern. Thanks to your support on the crowdfunder we are pleased to say that the free family Herne Hill Halloween Celebration will take place this year on 31st October. If you haven’t donated anything yet, you can still add your magic coins to our cauldron as we haven’t yet reached our target. The event takes place from 5 – 7pm on Thursday 31st October in Station Square and upstairs in Station Hall. The road will be closed to traffic from 3pm on the day and should re-open by 8:30pm.
