    Volunteering Open Day

    Sunday 2 March, 12noon to 3pm Is your New Year’s resolution to get more involved with your local community? Have you been to one of our events and wondered what volunteering with us might be like? Or perhaps you have a passion for local history and bringing stories to life? We’re hosting a Volunteering Open Day on Sunday 2 March. Sign up for a free ticket via eventbrite here: Pop in anytime between 12noon and 3pm to say hello to our team, find out more about the roles we have on offer and hear about plans for this year.  There will also be some mini tours of the mill plus hot drinks and baked treats made with our flour. We are currently looking for more tour guides, millers, gardeners and cafe helpers. We welcome young people and can help with volunteering programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

    Bell House Pottery: Throwing on the wheel for teenagers – a 4-week beginners course for ages 13-17

    Throwing on the Wheel, 4-week course, Beginners, 13–17-year-olds Cost £160 for four 2-hour sessions. £80 concessions Available dates: Course is on four consecutive Saturday mornings. Next course is 8-29 March 2025 Booking website: https://buytickets.at/bellhousepotterystudio/1316047 During the weekly 2-hour sessions: You will have a first go at centering clay on the wheel, throwing cylinders and bowls. You will also learn how to finish your pots and how to decorate with slips. You can keep up to six pots which will be fired and glazed for you at the end of this course. The cost of all materials and firings are included in your course fee. Please note: This course is for teenagers only, aged 13-17. Throwing on the wheel can be a messy business and aprons will not be provided. Please wear appropriate clothing. About the teacher: Alice Wakefield Alice is the most recent recruit to the Bell House Pottery team. She joined us in September 2024. Alice has experience teaching students in both throwing and hand-building in potteries, community centres and schools.      Ceramic Art and Life Join us for an evening with Julian Stair OBE, one of UK’s leading potters, who will talk about the ideas that have shaped his practice over five decades - works that range from the everyday to rites of passage. Julian is a leading historian of English studio ceramics. He completed a PhD at the RCA researching the critical origins of English studio pottery and has written extensively throughout his career. He has received awards in recognition of his contribution to contemporary practice including an OBE in 2022 for his services to ceramics. Yale University Press and the Sainsbury Centre published a monograph on his work ‘Memory Material Ceramics’ in 2024. He has exhibited internationally since 1982, where he has worked in over 30 public collections including at the V&A, British Museum, American Museum of Art & Design, Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art and many more.     Come stitch your own piece of springtime magic! Relax on a Sunday afternoon, learn simple sewing techniques and connect with the healing plants and rich botanical folklore of Britain! In this relaxing and creative workshop, we will explore the symbolism and historical uses of four British springtime plants: daffodil, snake’s head fritillary, bluebell, and yarrow. These plants are celebrated for their connections to healing and protection, perfect for the changing of the seasons! Using simple embroidery techniques, participants will stitch a spring meadow illustration, learning a variety of embroidery stitches such as backstitch, whipped stitch and French knots. The design will be framed within the hoop, allowing you to take home a beautiful, nature-inspired ornament that can be displayed as a decorative piece.     Throwing on a batt: A one-day intermediate level weekend workshop led by Birgit Pohl Learn how to attach a wooden batt to the wheel head. Practice a variety of flatware shapes on the batt. Immerse yourself in throwing on the wheel for a full day! You can choose up to three pots which will be trimmed, glazed and fired for you. Please note  This intermediate level course will not cover centring or pulling up. Participants must be able to centre 1kg of clay before signing up to the course.     Join us on Sunday 13 April for a family day in Windmill Gardens. We’ll be running a treasure hunt for children with a chocolate treat to find (£2.50 suggested donation) from 1.30pm.  Free Easter themed craft workshops will run at the centre all afternoon. Our cafe and shop will be open and we are hoping for a sunny spring day to enjoy the park and windmill together. The windmill is open for guided tours from 1pm to 5pm so you could combine your visit with a tour if you like!
