Candlelit concert for Earth Hour, inspired by John Ruskin

Earth Hour Candlelit Concert Saturday March 22nd , 8.30-9.30pm St Giles Church, Camberwell, SE5 8RB Tickets: £12 (£5 concessions) Experience an Earth Hour like no other with a spellbinding candlelit concert by members of Orchestra for the Earth, a musical and environmental charity. Join WWF's global 'lights-out' under the magnificent backlit East Window of St Giles Church, designed by famous South London resident and pioneering environmental campaigner, John Ruskin. Share Ruskin’s love of nature and the Alps through a gorgeous programme of music by Mahler and Richard Strauss, who also took inspiration from the mountains. The concert will be interwoven with insights from Ruskin's works given by Andrew Hill, Financial Times journalist and author of 'Ruskinland: How John Ruskin Shapes Our World'. Ceramic Art and Life with Julian Stair – a Bell House talk – Friday 21 March 7-8 pm

 Ceramic Art and Life Join us for an evening with Julian Stair OBE, one of UK’s leading potters, who will talk about the ideas that have shaped his practice over five decades - works that range from the everyday to rites of passage. Julian is a leading historian of English studio ceramics. He completed a PhD at the RCA researching the critical origins of English studio pottery and has written extensively throughout his career. He has received awards in recognition of his contribution to contemporary practice including an OBE in 2022 for his services to ceramics. Yale University Press and the Sainsbury Centre published a monograph on his work ‘Memory Material Ceramics’ in 2024. He has exhibited internationally since 1982, where he has worked in over 30 public collections including at the V&A, British Museum, American Museum of Art & Design, Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art and many more. Bell House Pottery: Throwing on the wheel for teenagers – a 4-week beginners course for ages 13-17

Throwing on the Wheel, 4-week course, Beginners, 13–17-year-olds Cost £160 for four 2-hour sessions. £80 concessions Available dates: Course is on four consecutive Saturday mornings. Next course is 8-29 March 2025 Booking website: https://buytickets.at/bellhousepotterystudio/1316047 During the weekly 2-hour sessions: You will have a first go at centering clay on the wheel, throwing cylinders and bowls. You will also learn how to finish your pots and how to decorate with slips. You can keep up to six pots which will be fired and glazed for you at the end of this course. The cost of all materials and firings are included in your course fee. Please note: This course is for teenagers only, aged 13-17. Throwing on the wheel can be a messy business and aprons will not be provided. Please wear appropriate clothing. About the teacher: Alice Wakefield Alice is the most recent recruit to the Bell House Pottery team. She joined us in September 2024. Alice has experience teaching students in both throwing and hand-building in potteries, community centres and schools.
