SUMMARY:Classical Yoga Philosophy: The Yogasūtra of Patañjali - Yoga Point Brixton
DESCRIPTION:BOOK HERE \nJoin us for a special philosophy workshop designed for dedicated yoga practitioners and teachers who are eager to deepen their understanding of yoga beyond the mat. Led by renowned yoga scholar Dr. Seth Powell\, together we will engage in a close reading and study of one of yoga’s most ancient\, important\, and mis-understood scriptures. \nThe Yogasūtra of Patañjali\, written some 1\,500 years ago\, is the earliest extant systematization of Yoga philosophy and practice. Rendered into 195 short\, dense\, Sanskrit “threads” or sūtras\, the Yogasūtra is the root text for the Yoga philosophical tradition. It is a profound treatise on the nature of the human condition which examines: the cognitive mechanics and psychology of the mind-body\, the cause of human suffering\, and offers a map of psychophysical practices that can be cultivated in order to obtain complete spiritual freedom or liberation. \nIn this workshop\, designed for both beginners and long-time students alike\, we will focus on the first and second chapters (pāda)\, which treat the definition of yoga\, the nature of the mind\, the cause of suffering and its cure: a detailed “eight-limbed” (aṣṭāṅga) system of yogic practices. \nParticipants will leave with a deeper understanding of the history\, theory\, and practice of yoga as outlined in Patañjali’s Yogasūtra–and a better sense of how the yoga we are doing today relates (or not) to this ancient Indian philosophy. \nDr. Seth Powell is a scholar of Indian religions\, Sanskrit\, and yoga traditions\, who earned his PhD in South Asian Religions at Harvard University. He is the founder and director of Yogic Studies—a leading online educational platform for Yoga and South Asian Studies. His dissertation comprised a critical edition\, translation\, and detailed study of a 15th-century Sanskrit yoga text from south India known as the Śivayogapradīpikā—which uniquely combines yoga\, ritual\, and devotion. Seth also works on the visual and material culture of yoga in premodern India\, uncovering yoga’s past through temple sculptures. He has published extensively on the history of yoga and presents his research regularly at international conferences. \nAs an educator\, Seth is passionate about sharing the latest academic research on yoga’s vast history and philosophies and is gifted in his ability to present the ancient teachings of yoga clearly in an accessible\, light-hearted\, and inspiring manner—while maintaining a rigor and sensitivity to traditional Indian knowledge systems. In addition to teaching online\, he leads workshops and retreats around the world\, including annual educational pilgrimages to India. He is also the host of The Yogic Studies Podcast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf prices are a barrier please write in to info@yogapoint.co.uk \nConcession prices are available.

SUMMARY:Lambeth Open 2025
DESCRIPTION:Explore your creative neighbourhood.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nOn the first weekend of October artists and crafts people across the borough of Lambeth will be opening their studio and work spaces to the public. Doors will be open from 10am to 6pm\, 4th and 5th October and admission will be free.Dots will be added to our map as artists and makers sign up to this year’s event. Lambeth Open showcases the fantastic range of creative talent tucked away in our borough and is a great way to discover the various art spaces too often hidden in your neighbourhoods. \nVisitors will be able to see inside the artist’s studios and exhibition spaces for a unique personal insight into the individual technical processes. Private Views may be held at a number of exhibition spaces\, see venues for details. \n\nFEATURED ARTIST\nPRISCILLA WATKINS’ oil paintings are meditations on a theme of light and water and how the experience of swimming removes us for a moment from normal life providing solace\, peace and a chance for recovery. It’s worth a visit just to see these beautiful works but she also has a new collection of framed paperpool collages\, more playful in tone with figures inspired by her beloved Brockwell Lido and by memories of wild and sea-swimming. \n\nFEATURED ARTIST\nGRACE BIRKETT KENRICK is an emerging studio potter who trained in Spain under traditional earthenware artesans in Barcelona\, before completing a ceramics degree at the Escuela de Arte de Granada. She now works making functional stoneware ceramics on the potters wheel\, firing in an electric kiln from her zero-waste garden studio in SW London. \nShe also teaches regular throwing and glaze development courses\, with education and sustainability at the heart of her practice. Her approach to making is very much based in the materials themselves and glaze development is a big part of her process. \n\nFEATURED ARTIST\nMARY PIERCE favourite medium is watercolour and ink\, and she likes to paint gardens\, flowers\, and people. She always find inspiration for painting in Bonnington Square\, a tranquil oasis\, not far from the river. \nAs many gardeners also live there\, the Square is full of beautiful trees\, shrubs and flowers. Having also studied textile design\, colour and texture are also important to her. She is available for commissions and her paintings are also available in giclee prints.

Stay and Play! – there will be an opportunity post show for the audience to have a go sitting and swinging on the aerial silks. \n\n\nRecommended age 4+\nFully accessible theatre\nDementia friendly theatre \nPlease note well behaved dogs are welcome but they must be kept on a lead at all times. \nThe show will go on whatever the weather (unless thunder/lightening anticipated). \n\n\n\nFind out more about The Dot Collective’s production and their work here.
