SUMMARY:Are You Ready For A Flood?
DESCRIPTION: Learn About Flood Resilience\nat\nBlue Patch’s Coffee\, Cake and Connect\nWednesday 18 September\n10am-1pm\nHalf Moon Pub (garden workshop)\n10 Half Moon Lane\nSE24 9HU\nBlue Patch\, the social enterprise focused on net zero and climate change education\, is hosting the first of a series of events aimed at helping residents and business owners prepare for future flooding. Taking place in Herne Hill on Wednesday 18th September\, the interactive workshop will offer practical advice on flood resilience and recovery from two of the UK’s leading flood experts. \nWith climate change driving more extreme rainfall\, Herne Hill has become increasingly vulnerable to flooding. During the 2004 storms\, torrential downpours overwhelmed drainage systems\, causing surface water flooding that disrupted local businesses and damaged properties. \nHerne Hill’s location\, combined with its historical ties to the now culverted River Effra\, makes it particularly susceptible to such events. Further floods in 2013 and 2016 have only reinforced the area’s ongoing flood risks\, underscoring the urgent need for property flood resilience measures. \nThe “Coffee\, Cake and Connect: Are You Ready for a Flood?” event offers practical advice on flood resilience and recovery from two of the UK’s leading experts. Join Mary Long-Dhonau OBE\, property flood resilience champion\, and Gareth Boyd\, CEO of Watertight International\, for an engaging and informative workshop designed to help guests prepare for future floods. \nMary Long-Dhonau OBE\, also known as Flood Mary\, will be sharing her invaluable experience and insights on flood preparedness. Mary has been at the forefront of flood risk education in the UK\, using her personal experience of multiple floods to guide communities through resilience planning. She will be joined by Gareth Boyd\, CEO of Watertight International\, a company renowned for its innovative solutions in property flood resilience\, as an Environment Agency PFR Framework provider. \nMary Long-Dhonau OBE said\, “Having been flooded myself\, I understand the emotional and financial toll it can take. Preparing for floods is no longer optional – it’s a necessity. I look forward to sharing practical steps to help make homes and businesses more resilient to this growing threat.” \nGareth Boyd\, CEO of Watertight International\, adds\, “Flooding is one of the most pressing climate risks we face. By making small\, affordable adjustments to properties now\, we can significantly reduce the damage caused by future floods. I’m excited to be part of this event and to help local communities take control of their flood risk.” \nJane Langley\, CEO of Blue Patch\, confirms: “Being based in Herne Hill\, I’ve seen the floods and the resulting fall-out firsthand\, which is why I decided that flood awareness and preparedness should become a focus topic for our Coffee\, Cake and Connect workshops. It is crucial to bring the local community together and arm them with practical knowledge\, expert advice\, and the tools they need to safeguard their homes and businesses against future climate risks. Our aim is to empower communities across the country with taking control of their flood preparedness\, so they can build a more resilient future.” \nEvent Details:\nDate: Wednesday\, 18th September 2024\nTime: 10:00am – 1:00pm\nLocation: Half Moon Pub\, 10 Half Moon Lane\, London SE24 9HU\nCost: £20 per person (includes food and refreshments) \nAgenda:\n10:00am: Networking\, coffee\, and cakes\n10:30am: Presentation: The Road to Resilience – Gareth Boyd\nCase Studies of Floods – Mary Long-Dhonau OBE \n11:45am: Escape Room Challenge – judged by Mary Long-Dhonau OBE\n12:30 – 1:00pm: Networking. Refreshments and sandwiches provided. \nYou can purchase a ticket for the event \nFor more information\, visit www.floodmary.com\, www.watertightint.com and www.bluepatch.org.  \nMary Long-Dhonau \n Blue Patch’s Coffee\, Cake & Connect workshops bring local people and experts together to build a more climate resilient future.

SUMMARY:Talk at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses | Sarah Rigby and Sui Searle: This Allotment\, Stories of Growing\, Eating and Nurturing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses to celebrate the release of This Allotment: Stories of Growing\, Eating and Nurturing\, a collection of 12 vibrant pieces celebrating of allotment life\, from gardeners\, food writers\, novelists\, horticulturalists\, and historians. Editor and publisher Sarah Rigby will be in conversation with gardener\, writer and print maker Sui Searle.  \nAn allotment. ‘A ‘10 pole’ space for the growing of fruit and vegetables. A health-giving\, heart-filling miniature kingdom of carrots\, courgettes and callaloo. A microcosm for our societies at large as people claim their ‘patch’ and guard it fiercely\, but also of welcoming arms\, gifted gluts and new recipes from across the seas. \nThey are places of resilience\, resistance and freedom. They are blowsy dahlias\, cricket on the radio\, buzzing bees and the wisdom of weeds and seeds. This Allotment brings together thirteen brilliant writers in a glorious celebration of these entirely unique spaces: plots that mean so much more than the soil upon which they sit. \n  \nSarah Rigby is an editor\, publisher and book coach\, and publishing director at the vibrant independent Elliott & Thompson. She has published some of the country’s best-loved and award-winning writers of nature and place\, including Nancy Campbell\, Rob Cowen and James Aldred. Originally from Yorkshire\, she lives in London with her family\, where she shares an allotment with her friend Viv and volunteers for Organic Lea\, a workers’ co-operative and community food-growing project on the edge of Epping Forest. \nSui Searle is a gardener\, writer and printmaker. She retrained in horticulture as a career change and has worked in botanic\, public\, private and community gardens as well as spending a short period writing for gardening magazines. She is the founder of @decolonisethegarden\, which focuses on bringing a decolonial lens to horticulture\, and is editor of the alternative online gardening newsletter\, Radicle. Both aim to seek\, in community\, possibilities of an otherwise. She sees the garden as a site of everchanging co-creation with the potential to practise other modes of being – a place to practise being in kinship and cultivating deeper relationships with our more-than-human kin. \n  \nTickets are Pay What You Can from £7. \nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Talk at BPCG | Fiona Davison: An Almost Impossible Thing
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Fiona Davison’s aclaimed book An Almost Impossible Thing. The book follows six convention-busting women gardeners in the years before the First World War\, examining their lives in the context of suffragism\, collectivism and Empire. \n‘Gardening\, taken up as a hobby when all the laborious work can be done by a man\, is delightful\, but as a life’s work for a woman\, it is almost an impossible thing.’ Sir Joseph Hooker\, 1817-1911. \nWhile working at the Royal Horticultural Society\, Fiona Davison came across a cache of letters from a young gardener who was denied a fellowship because she was a woman. Appalled\, and intrigued to discover what became of Olive\, Fiona began researching the wider story of early female professional gardeners whose struggles changed forever the rights and opportunities for women gardeners. \nTickets are Pay What You Can from £7 | Find out more and book here
