HOTMOTEL at OTC as part of Herne Hill Music Festival

October 15 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

£8 – £12

Herne Hill native sons HOTMOTEL play Off the Cuff in Railton Road on Friday 15th October as part of the 2021 Herne Hill Music Festival. The appearance marks 8 years since the band originally formed and played the Festival’s 2013 Bandstand in Herne Hill Market. At that time the band featured founding members Rupert Ingham and Donald Ross Skinner, with backing singers and a covers repertoire. Rupert had just come off years playing with Ingham Swing Ensemble (a jazz collective also made up of Luke Fowler and Paul Canton, who later set up The Junction jazz venue in Coldharbour Lane) and Moodswing, a duo with pianist Marius Bak. Donald was a veteran of the indie music scene as guitarist, songwriter and producer known for his work with Julian Cope. He had also worked with Love Amongst Ruin and DC Fontana. Rupert and Don had also collaborated in the Idle Eye spoken word group (https://idleeye.co.uk)

It wasn’t long before the singers were sacked and the band brought in Nigel Dean as their drummer, and HOTMOTEL began to work on original material, often premiering songs at the annual Dorchester Court Summer Party.

From the start, the band has prized originality and envisioned itself as the consummate DIY ensemble, getting everything done in-house, from website and social media to videos self-shot and edited by Nigel. But there was one more big covers party, when they performed a Doors set in Dorchester Court (with former Moodswinger Marius Bak on keys).

A few gigs, singles and videos followed before pandemic struck, and shortly thereafter, in June of 2020, Rupert was himself struck down by a stroke and spent the next 8 months in hospital learning how to function again. As for the band at that time, says Rupert in an interview done for Herne Hill Music Festival, “I thought it was all gone.” But the rest of HOTMOTEL, now also including Michael Clough on bass, kept meeting and rehearsing. And as soon as Rupert was ready, they got back on track. You can hear this interview on the band’s SOUNDCLOUD page: https://soundcloud.com/hotmotel/hotmotel-iv2.

Their Festival gig this week is break-through testament to the band’s resilience, and Ingham’s come-back tenacity in getting well and creative against all the odds. As is their latest single ‘Not Now Mama’ just released pre-Festival, and which you can see on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cras3IR5dtw.

If you don’t have them yet, get your tickets for the Festival gig off the Fest site, or by visiting https://www.wegottickets.com/event/520825. Two openers The Barbarian Horde and T.A.Wright & Orchestra Fantasma from 8pm, before Rupert, Don, Nigel and Cloughy take to the stage at 9:15pm.  Get ready to rock, Herne Hill! It should be a blast.
