Gig at the Greenhouses with Lowenstein and Middleton

April 16 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

£12 – £15

Two of the UK’s leading Klezmer musicians, Anna Lowenstein (Violin) and Josh Middleton (Accordion), come together for a special duo concert.  In this program they will embark on a spontaneous and expansive journey through their shared repertoire of favourite Yiddish melodies and dance numbers drawn from a repertoire of centuries-old East European Jewish Folk Music.  Don’t be shy, you’re allowed to dance!

Anna Lowenstein trained initially in Classical music, and graduated from Manchester University in 2015 with a BA in Music where she specialised in Performance and Ethnomusicology.  She has gigged, toured and taught across London and the UK, including at Cecil Sharp House, for Southbank Centre’s Friday Tonic series and The Jazz Cafe in London, Sage Gateshead- Newcastle, and multiple tours for the National Rural Touring Forum. Since 2011, Anna has been traveling internationally to learn with some of the leading performers and teachers of Klezmer music including Alicia Svigals in New York, Alan Bern in Weimar, Germany and Frank London in, well….London.  She is fast becoming one of the UK’s most sought after performers and teachers of the Klezmer fiddle style – appearing in the 3-month run of highly critically acclaimed production of Indecent alongside Musical Director and Clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, performing widely as part of Klezmer trio Loshn and teaching at The Jewish Music Institute’s Klezfest London.

Josh Middleton is an accordionist, composer and musical director based in London. As a professional accordionist Josh specialises in Klezmer and East European Folk styles, however, he also plays a wide range of styles such as English/Scottish/Irish Folk, French Chanson, Manouche Jazz. He has been performing music professionally since the age of 14, graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies with a first class degree in Ethnomusicology, and has since been working as a freelance musician while studying both Klezmer and Bulgarian music, the latter at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts, Plovdiv. Josh has worked with many Klezmer and Balkan music ensembles such as She’koyokh and The London Klezmer Quartet, has shared a stage with Klezmorim such as Frank London and Merlin Shepherd, taught at Klezfest London alongside Klezmer scholars such as Alan Bern and Joel Rubin, and recorded for artists as diverse as DJ Vadim and Kadialy Kouyate.
