Manager for the Herne Hill Community Market extension wanted

The Herne Hill Forum are looking for the services and expertise necessary to extend the Sunday Herne Hill Community Market to the Southwark side of Herne Hill. The market will extend over to Norwood Road and Half Moon Lane later in 2016.

We are looking for some amazing skills, enthusiasm and expertise. A strong desire to help grow small businesses, promote good food and good food provenance, support the local creative industries and a real "hands-on" approach to all that a vibrant and innovative community market needs.

Possibly next for Herne Hill Station's Square? Report on Peckham's latest Network Rail consultation

Following a previous session in November 2013, a further consultation was held on Sat. Jan 18th in Rye Lane Baptist Chapel to meet the community about latest redevelopment plans for a new 'Peckham Piazza' in the area around Peckham Rye Train Station organised by what appears to be a group composed of Network Rail, TfL, architects and local government with manifesto driven by "promotion of (the area) as a catalyst for regeneration and higher value rental returns from Network Rail assets." (PECKHAM RYE STATION: the case for change - Southwark 2011 doc). This in turn looks to be driven by Spacia 'arches' generation schemes elsewhere - i.e. Wooten Street, Waterloo, also Bishopsgate. What was expected to be a more limited development of a square in front of the station (and here we thought Peckham already had a square development in front of the library) now looks to include high rises, demolition of arches retail space for generic retail space at higher rents, and incalcuable construction time. Leaseholders would be protected with some kind of buyout, renting traders would have 3 months' notice.

Awareness of volunteering raising at Volunteer Centre Southwark Dec 28th

On Saturday 28th December, Volunteer Centre Southwark will be supporting Crisis at Christmas – the annual event for homeless people – by raising awareness of volunteering. This is an opportunity to experience information provision and support for a diverse audience, work within a team, develop befriending skills, and be part of a thriving and dynamic charity facilitating community activity across the borough of Southwark.

The Volunteer Centre's role will be to inform Crisis at Christmas service users, many of them being homeless and potentially experiencing other barriers to volunteering, about volunteering and the benefits volunteering brings to individuals and the community as a whole. This all takes place in Bermondsey, Southwark, and available shifts are from 10am till 1pm and 1pm till 5pm.

Herne Hill Music Fest WEEKEND RECAP! The Secular, the Sacred & everything-in-between!

We're working on a Festival Music Trail! Progress so far:

The Festival got off to a flying start on Friday at a sold-out Prince Regent with Django jazz from locals The Crispy Hot Club followed by ace blues stalwarts Steve Morrison and Alan Glen.

Saturday a super busy day - Fest's busiest - beginning with The Calton String Quartet at the Carnegie Library in Herne Hill Road for string classics at lunchtime and snacks laid on by Carnegie Friends.

Elephant & the Nun climax this weekend with 'Our Grand Saturday'

The Elephant & the Nun, Southwark's multidisciplinary and multicultural 10 day arts festival, hasn't been the easiest festie to track just because it has involved so many different arts producers (loads were originally invited to bid and quite a few selected) staging events over such a long stretch of time! The Arbonauts provided an unofficial warmup with their production in Nunhead Cemetery two weekends ago, and the official launch happened on the 11th at Illiffe Yard's The Electric Elephant cafe with Los Ninos Vallenatos. The whole thing now comes to a close this weekend, led by 'Our Grand Saturday' - represented by four unique events at Camberwell Green, St Mary's Churchyard, Peckham Square and Peckham Rye. Family-friendly fun stuff, and all free, btw.

1. Azucar Flower Festival, a wonderland of flowers, music and dance taking over St Mary's Churchyard with traditional Latin-American costumes, dance and authentic Latin-American food.

2. Combonation, a mash-up of music and dance at an exciting new event at Camberwell Green, which has been produced by a team of young producers from Southwark.

Paralympic 24 Hour Torch Relay Tomorrow, Weds Aug 29th

Just in case you're wondering about the 24 hour Paralympic Flame route tomorrow, it won't come very near Herne Hill, but you can catch it in Southwark and Lewisham boroughs. It will enter Southwark tomorrow (Weds) at approximately 1.19pm when it is carried over Tower Bridge onto Tooley Street before heading to City Hall for a lunch stop. After lunch (2.22pm) the relay will continue on to Tooley Street, Jamaica Road (around 2.30pm) and then Lower Road (around 2.40pm) ending with a short stop at the Surrey Dock Watersports Centre for a photocall at around 3pm. It will leave the borough and travel on through Deptford to Lewisham just before 3.30pm, then cross the Thames at Greenwich for the Isle of Dogs.

There's a good chance that the map posting here won't be easy to read, so you can check out the London 21012 interactive map at:

Nunhead's the place this weekend Sept 1st & 2nd (Herne Hill's the place next ... 8th & 9th!)

Sorry for this very long news post - but too much to mention and all last gasp!

Herne Hill straddles Lambeth AND Southwark, so here's info about a festival next weekend in Nunhead, which is turning out to be a hotspot for arts, crafts and grassroots music.

Part of Southwark's Elephant & the Nun weekender (billed as "A free family festival like no other" offering 9 events in 9 spaces in 2 days), the 'Nunhead Experience' will happen SUNDAY Sept 2nd. It'll be a largely bicycle-powered arts & crafts fest, reminiscent of the alt energy ethos HH had at the Urban Green Fair in Brockwell Park (remember the solar powered cinema?) which last we looked is dead and gone. On SATURDAY the 1st it is the Aquarius Festival at the Aquarius Golf Links, on the Nunhead/Honor Oak border.
