Petition to Save The Flower Lady

A petition has been initiated to help save Elaine Partleton’s florist shop, The Flower Lady. Despite its existence next to Herne Hill station for over 10 years, landlord Network Rail wants it to make way for an electricity sub-station to power the arches that it has refurbished at the “Station Square” end of Railton Road. According to the Brixton Blog, Elaine was “offered a shop some distance from the station and at a rent forecast to be double what she pays currently.”

2015 Herne Hill Music Festival Bandstands recap!

For the third year running, the Herne Hill Music Festival in conjunction with the Herne Hill Forum hosted bandstand events in Herne Hill Market. As in 2014, this year there were two bandstand events on two Sundays (the first Sunday slightly truncated because Capicorn Sax Quartet was forced to cancel) in the market section of Railton Road.

Help! Herne Hill Music Festival's Sept 6th Market Bandstand needs you!

FACES TO PLACES: Shirley at 198 & Martin at Island Art Studio

198 Contemporary Arts and Island Arts Studio are two community, arts and education-focused venues located in Herne Hill. With first Jazz On The Hill sputtering to closure and then the Half Moon flooded out of business - both venues with raised stages indoors - good, regular live performance space in Herne Hill has become very hard to find. Herne Hill Market offers occasional marquee live music dates but these are affected by weather. Off The Cuff, in the old arches timber yard, has only recently opened. So both 198 and Island Art are being used as venues this year by Herne Hill Music Festival. We met up with two locals who help run them.

Ope Lori's 'I Want Me Some Brown Sugar' currently on at 198

Until November 5th at 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning in Railton Road (198):

Through newly commissioned video installations and photographic works, Ope Lori’s utilises explicit use of stereotypes and focuses on taboo subjects, inter racial mixing, gender role-playing and sexuality, all of which stem from the feminist mantra - that the personal is political.
