Local Greens

Local Greens- calling out for veg enthusiasts!

Local Greens, is a Herne Hill based not for profit. We sell UK only, seasonal fruit and veg to hungry south Londoners. A few of our amazing volunteers are taking a well-deserved summer holiday which means we need extra support packing our fruit and veg bags. We're a happy bunch, who like tea and cake. You will also be gifted one of our veg bags every time you help out.

Blast from the recent past: Herne Hill's Redeem the Swede contest!

Swede or neep, aka turnip, rutabaga … a versatile veg often referred to as pig fodder yet loaded with vit A, vit C and a rich source of fibre, calcium and potassium! But how to prepare it? Daffodils are already flowering, so here's a winter story while there's still a bit of 2014 winter left … and one which suggests a few swede recipes!

Local Business Makes National Press

Local Greens a not for profit weekly veg bag scheme based here in Herne Hill made it to the 10 Best Vegetable Box Schemes list compiled by the Independent newspaper. Local Greens provides the area (Herne Hill, East Dulwich, Dulwich, West Dulwich, Brixton, Camberwell, West Norwood, and Crystal Palace) with great tasting, seasonal veg from small organic or spray-free farms, which are as near to SE London as they can find, the closest farm is less than 11 miles away.

Local Greens is different because they buy seasonal veg direct from small organic or spray-free farms, which are as close to Herne Hill as they can possibly find. The veg is delivered to Herne Hill on Wednesday or very early Thursday morning.

Cities aren’t renowned for food production. The arrival of the railways, in fact, pushed food production out of the city and disconnected city dwellers, on the whole, from where their food came from. But there’s a Renaissance afoot and the chutney we’re offering customers this Christmas is a testament to the wave of change.

Introducing “South London Salad”

If you’re like your salad really fresh and after some baby chard from south of the Shard, or butterhead from near Nunhead, then Local Greens’ new salad bag is just for you.

It’s called South London Salad because it really does come from South London and is part of Local Greens weekly veg bag scheme. We’ve asked Natasha Soares, our Neighbourhood Farm Growing Coordinator, to find a pool of local people who want to grow salad leaves for our salad bag. They get paid and we get the freshest salad in South London, all harvested within a 2.5 mile radius of our customers.
