We caught up with Jason Collins, Herne Hill's Folk-Man-About-Town at the Aquarius Festival (yes that's Jason on the Aquarius fairway in the pic below) earlier on today and learned that he & The Umbrellabirds are busy this weekend with (count 'em) three SE London gigs on the cards for Sunday Sept 2nd. They start their day playing the Herne Hill Sunday Market at 11am. move over to Nunhead Green for the Nunhead Experience at around 2pm, and wrap up at The Rookery, a formally landscaped space with a cafe, an ornamental pond, flower and herbaceous beds, and a rock garden with streams which borders Streatham Common (Covington Way, SW16 3BX). All being well, they'll get started at The Rookery at around 5pm.
The Umbrellabirds are a folk collective (hence the 'unbrella') of up to 8 members, sometimes more if friends show up, who blend multiple vocal harmonies with traditional Appalachian style old time folk. At any given time instruments range from banjo to mandolin, guitar, clarinet (!) and fiddle.
