Music Umbrella's Half Term Hallowe'en Workshop

This half-term, come and join Music Umbrella for some scary fun!

For two days in the function rooms of the Cambria pub in Camberwell we'll be writing spooky songs, devising some drama, painting our faces and putting on a little show.

Taking a ghost story as our basis we'll put on a short play, with songs to match.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th October, upstairs in the function rooms of the Cambria, 40 Kemerton Road, Camberwell, SE5 9AD.

Running from 10am until 3pm each day, costing £65/£75 with lunch.

Suitable for children from 7 - 12 years old.

Scratchy violins, horrible sound effects and small ghosts all welcome!

To book call Lucy on 07980 985658 or go to www.musicumbrella.co.uk

Music Umbrella - book now for new podcast workshop

The people behind Music Umbrella will be running an extra course in the Summer holidays, called Podcast Premiere.

Over 3 days kids between 8 and 12 years old are invited to come along to the Cambria and ceate a buzzy radio programme, with chat, drama, and music all involved. On the final day they'll go to a professional recording studio and record the result.

If you'd like to book any of these courses, please get in touch now as the team are now finalising numbers for the workshops, which are happening very soon!

Local Instructor Launches Yoga Nidra CD and Website

A local tai chi teacher and yoga instructor has just released a Yoga Nidra CD on his own website, which he has also recently launched with the help of RBM Design, a locally-based and grassroots design concern.

Rupert Ingham, who teaches tai chi at St Paul's Church in Herne Hill once a week and also works with yoga students on a one to one basis in the local area, decided to release the CD to help people relax and become more successful decision-makers in the process. For many people, today's increasingly frantic, stress-related lifestyles can lead to debilitating anxiety, depression and confusion, with immune systems compromised in the bargain.

Ingham's CD (and classes) hinge on two principles at the heart of yogic concentration - mindfulness and relaxation. According to Ingham, "Mindfulness is the art of gently focussing one's mind and concentrating one's awareness. Deep relaxation is the art of arriving in the state of deepest possible rest. The CD is designed, through its series of meditation exercises, to help students achieve this."

Good Friday in Herne Hill

The Umbrellabirds!

The Unbrellabirds are a folk music collective based in Herne Hill starting to take the indie folk scene by storm ... and just in time for the summer season! The collective has evolved from musical connections at the Steiner School when it was based in Streatham. From ad hoc beginnings at Steiner kids' music class jams, The Umbrellabirds have been guided into existence by Jason Collins who has a long history in the music business (he once toured Japan as a member of The Seers) through a series of smaller incarnations and collaborations, each with a different name, like The Harbour Road Band, playing spaces like The Cambria on Kemerton Road! Just in case you weren't aware, South London has become the epicentre of a huge folk resurgence!

Census survey for Herne Hill

The 2011 Census

As residents already know, and the Census will soon confirm, Herne Hill is a colourful and vital place packed with folk from everywhere, droves of students, and of course plentiful Jedi Warriors.  It also has some curious anomalies – like a slightly declining population, and unusually high numbers of people who’ve benefitted from higher education.

What is less known, is that Lambeth, Southwark and other London boroughs were so undercounted last time round, that they missed out on millions of pounds in government grants.  This time round the Office of National Statistics calculates that each person who doesn’t return their form costs a borough over £600 in lost income.
