Life drawing classes/events with a good old fashioned sense of style!

Two community-based activities taking off like rockets this Spring: free film festivals and life drawing classes! We've previously mentioned a great surge of interest in life drawing classes around SE London and Herne Hill in particular at the Prince Regent through Lisa Brown's SketchPad group. For our area you can also add Betty Frankenstien's Drawing Room at The Cambria (40 Kemerton off Herne Hill) which happens on Wednesday nights from 7-9, and costs £8. She also runs a class at the Sparrowhawk Pub in Crystal Palace (SE19 1RX) on Mondays from 7-9pm.

Betty describes the Cambria class as very relaxed, set to a mix of blues, jazz and folk music, with no need to book. Her tagline is 'Life drawing classes and events with good old fashioned sense of style'.

HERNE HILL TAI CHI CLUB, Tuesdays at St Paul's, Herne Hill

7pm Tuesdays

St Pauls Church Hall

Herne Hill SE24 9LY

12 class term £90.00

Come along next Tuesday and give one a go. For free! Friendly group! Tai Chi can help to get you balanced, centred and relaxed. Rupert Ingham, the class teacher, has studied with some of the most knowledgeable people in this field. It's a Yang-style 楊氏 Tai Chi Chüan class from 7 till 8:30pm.

There are six major styles of Tai Chi, the Yang-family school is one of them. It focuses most closely on Yáng Chéngfǔ's (1900) thirteen classic tai chi 'Fixed Postures'. Yáng Chéngfǔ removed many of the more acrobatic movements which his grandfather and Yang school founder Yang Lu-chan incorporated.

Herne Hill Life Drawing - new course at The Prince Regent & an auction at Pullens!

In case you haven't noticed, life drawing classes have taken off like a rocket in SE London over the last year, with Bespoke life drawing now being hosted at various venues, plus plenty of other new classes becoming routinely established, very often in pubs!

Life drawing involves drawing the human figure from observation of a live model. In most cases this involves a nude model who is paid to pose. If you've seen the 2006 film "Venus" written by Hanif Kureishi and starring Peter O'Toole, you'll remember he finds co-star Jodie Whittaker a job as a life model. HE: "You said you wanted to be a model!" SHE: "But not take my clothes off!" Or something to that effect.

These days life modeling is a thriving business, in fact moneymagpie ran a feature on it!  http://www.moneymagpie.com/article/make-money-as-a-life-model

Brockwell Lido closing times this weekend, Dec 29th/30th

Don't forget this weekend there are extra special closing times at the Lido for gym and spa - 6pm. This means out of both at 5:30! Then on Monday, the 4pm shutting time means out by 3:30pm. New Years Day completely closed. Back to normal hours on Tues. But not to despair: if you want a swim somewhere (or a gym) nearby tonight (Sat), a later game in town is Brixton Rec with last ticket at 7:30pm! Yay! It will be later on Sunday as well, but ring 020 7095 5100 option 4 to find out how much later!

SPA REPORT (at the Lido)! for Dec 28th

SPA REPORT! All working although two of the hydrotherapy pool's key underwater jets (the big floor jet and the bubble beds) remain out of order. But the water was hot yesterday, so if you're looking for a good warmup, bring a book and camp out! Otherwise sauna at 80 and steam OK. Don't forget the premises will close at 8pm tonight Friday night ... shortened hours this week anyway, but earlier Friday closing constitutes the new routine maintenance hours recently established and which will carry forward into the new year.
