Vote now for Dylan Thomas Blue Plaque at the Half Moon!

Voting has opened for this year’s winner of the Southwark Blue Plaques scheme. This year’s shortlist includes the Half Moon Public House in Herne Hill, nominated for its connection to Welsh poet and author Dylan Thomas, who drank there regularly after London Welsh rugby games at the Herne Hill Velodrome. And for its proximity to Milkwood Road, believed to have inspired the title of perhaps Dylan’s most celebrated work, ‘Under Milk Wood’.

Update on The Half Moon, Herne Hill from the Managing Director of Fullers:

As it’s been a while since we received planning, I thought it was time that I updated you all on what’s happening at The Half Moon in Herne Hill.

The Pubs of Dulwich and Herne Hill

Two local societies have come together to publish The Pubs of Dulwich and Herne Hill. This accessible, colour-illustrated book is a record of the many pubs that are no longer, as well as a celebration of those that continue to serve the Dulwich and Herne Hill communities. Very timely, as the The Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich and the Half Moon in Herne Hill are both currently closed!

Herne Hill is at a cross-roads

Herne Hill is at a cross roads.

Today saw the first of the many traders moving out of their premises in Station Square, moved on elsewhere so that the landlord, Network Rail can develop the site. Some of those traders have been there for decades, part of the fabric of the neighbourhood, there through thick and thin.

Half Moon set to reopen in 2016

On  Monday (4 January), The Dulwich Estate confirmed that they have signed a lease on the Half Moon with pub operator Fuller Smith & Turner Plc (Fullers). Fullers aim to reopen the pub, complete with a small number of hotel bedrooms, in the late summer 2016 subject to gaining relevant planning and listed building consents.

In December 2015, the Half Moon was made an Asset of Community Value (ACV) by Southwark Council.
