Dave Gelly is a tenor saxophonist, writer and broadcaster. His playing style is melodic, swinging jazz with the emphasis on good tunes and a warm tone. He started out playing in Blues By Six, with future Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (alternating dates with the Rolling Stones at the Marquee Club in 1963), in the New Jazz Orchestra with the legendary Ian Bird (ex Curtis-Bird Quintet - remember the single A side 'Tropicana'? If not just play the embedded clip!), with Ian Carr, Barbara Thompson, Jon Hiseman (Colloseum II), and on loads of broadcasts and pop sessions, including McGuiness-Flint and Keith Emerson. Gelly has played, toured or recorded with a number of veteran American blues artists, among them Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup, Johnny 'Guitar' Burns, Champion Jack Dupree and Johnny Shines. He'll be at the Half Moon with vocalist Annie Bright tonight - Annie's known as the Brit Peggy Lee! Cleo Laine more like? BTW she's also Dave's wife!
