effraspace is owned and run by Pinter & Martin, an independent Brixton-based publishing company established in 1997 by Martin Wagner and Maria Pinter. Pinter & Martin specialises in pregnancy, birth & parenting, yoga, health and psychology.

For a long time Pinter & Martin wanted to find a way to connect better with its readers, but a simple bookshop didn't seem enough. We wanted to have a space where people can meet, exchange ideas and have fun in a friendly and nurturing environment. Hence, when an old dilapidated community centre became available in the same street as our home and offices, we couldn't resist.

The building started life as the Brockwell Community Centre in the 1950s, but closed in the 1980s.* Since then it has been used as a nursery, a church and then stood empty. Pinter & Martin signed a long-term lease with Lambeth Council in 2015 and completely refurbished the building, adding a central lounge area between what used to be two separate buildings.

effraspace was officially opened by Michel Odent on 21 April 2016.
