Volunteers needed to visit older people

Local charity Link Age Southwark is looking for new volunteers to befriend isolated older people. The charity, based in East Dulwich, has been recruiting volunteers to support older people across Southwark for 23 years.

Volunteers spend an hour a week visiting an older person, for a chat, cup of tea or to go out for a walk. The charity also needs volunteers to lead social groups for older people, and volunteer drivers to give older people lifts to groups. Just an hour a week of volunteering makes a huge difference to the life of an older person, helping them to stay socially active and combatting loneliness. Volunteers enjoy getting to know older people and learning from their life experiences!

May, 98, who has been using the charity’s services for 13 years, says, “Before I joined Link Age Southwark I was lonely and bored. I’m so grateful to the charity’s volunteers for bringing joy to my life.”

Richard, 53, who visits two older gentlemen weekly, says, “They both appreciate my company and the chance to talk to somebody. They look forward to my visits, and I look forward to them too. I’ve made two new friends.”
