Stepping Into Stories: Kids' Lit Fest in Herne Hill, Feb 2020

After last year's Book Week at Station Hall, we are pleased to announce another week of fabulous bookish events coming to Herne Hill this February.

The festival will run from 4-9th February, with daytime events for school groups, evening workshops and performances (including talks for adults), and a packed line-up of celebrated authors and illustrators, including father and daughter Chris and Katy Riddell, Margaret Bateson-Hill, and Sibéal Pounder.

Children will have the chance to make their own comics, watch puppet performances, and explore everything from dinosaurs and dragons to Picasso and poetry. Adult sessions will include sessions on books for teens, reading for pleasure and an introduction to children's publishing, perfect if you've ever dreamed of creating your own children's book. We'll also be annoucing the winners of our 'Stepping Into Stories' storytelling competition, inspired by the 'Flying Boots and Eyes on Fire' Herne Hill art trail.

The festival is hosted at Station Hall throughout the week, but we also have some events at the Florence and the Half Moon, which are both fully accessible and buggy friendly. For the full line-up and booking details, please see here

The event has been created with the support of our own local, much-loved bookshop, Tales on Moon Lane, and CWISL (Children’s Writers and Illustrators for Stories and Literacy), an organisation with its roots in South London, and also with funds from the Thames Water flood compensation scheme.

As Tamara from Tales on Moon Lane says: 'This Children’s Literary Festival has been many years in the making and will put the area firmly on the map as a thriving destination for children’s literacy, publishing and storytelling. We intend February’s programme to launch an annual Herne Hill Kids’ Lit Fest, that will become a major event on the literary festival calendar’.

We look forward to bringing creativity and literary fun to the heart of Herne Hill - and if it's an area that interests you, we do have opportunities for volunteers, including young people (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh Award). If you'd like to help at one of the events, or are interested in finding out more, please email, and we will send you more details.
