Parrots Don't Live in the City! New children's storybook from Herne Hillian author
‘They were flying their kite, loop-the-loop up high,
When something emerald flickered by…’
Parrots Don’t Live in the City! is the first of four children’s storybooks from Herne Hillian Lucy Reynolds. You may know Lucy as Herne Hill’s ‘Town Centre Champion’, but now she has her other hat on as a new local children’s author. Perfect for two to six year olds, the book is written in easy rhyming couplets, with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, which lead young readers into a world of hidden birds and minibeasts in search of one very special creature…
You’ve guessed it - the book’s about parrots, inspired by our local parakeet population. But there’s more to it than that, as Lucy explains: ‘every time I’m out in the city I’m amazed by how much nature is all around us - in the most unexpected of places. We want to encourage children to appreciate this too. So our hide-and-seek books are about searching for animals that wouldn’t usually live in the city, whilst stopping to notice nature in local nooks and crannies’.
The idea was planted after Lucy spotted a parakeet in Brockwell Park but her husband wouldn’t believe her. A few weeks later she found a brilliant green feather hiding amongst the leaves, and the seed for the story was sown…
Lucy’s poems have been illustrated by good friend, Jenna Herman, and together the duo have set up their own publishing company, Doodles & Scribbles. With a background in fine art, this is Jenna’s first foray into picture book illustration, and has provided an exciting opportunity for the pair to develop their styles together. As Jenna reflects, ‘we’ve taught ourselves everything, from scansion and storyboarding, to cover design and bookbinding. We’re always fascinated by how inquisitive our young sons become when we're out and about in the natural environment. To them every outing is an adventure, a discovery, pure joy - and that's what we wanted to capture in Parrots Don’t Live in the City!. We’re very excited to have a finished book in our hands after two years of hard work, and think it’s the perfect story for little nature lovers and intrepid explorers alike’.
The pair have taken their book on tour and the feedback has been fantastic. As one local teacher from St Jude’s C.E. Primary School remarked: ‘it’s a really lovely story with gorgeous illustrations - I enjoyed it as much as the children!’.
To accompany the book, Jenna and Lucy have teamed up with Kimberly from Herne Hill’s Bumble Box to create a special edition family activity box, perfect for the summer holidays. The box is packed full of fun ways for families to get to know their birdy neighbours – parroty and otherwise - whilst creating lasting memories. The book (£7.99) and the book plus activity box (£19.99) are both available online from Doodles & Scribbles.
Lucy and Jenna will be reading Parrots Don’t Live in the City! at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses on Wednesday 30th August, from 10.30am-12.30pm.
