Happy 2018 from Dulwich Runners - Our Tuesday and Wednesday club run nights return this week!

The new year is a great time of year to set running and fitness goals such as performing the best you can in a forthcoming event, whether you have done it before or it is all completely new, and you are wondering what was I thinking! Well don't worry as we have runners of all abilities who have signed up for 10km, half marathon or marathons (such as London and Brighton) in the new year as well as people who are looking to improve their parkrun 5km time, get fit or just socialise. Running with other people should help provide the motivation support and top tips to achieve your goal.

Our weekly Tuesday and Wednesday night club runs return this week at Crystal Palace (2 January) and the Edward Alleyn Clubhouse, Burbage Road (3 January). These are open for both existing and potential members and are suitable for over 16s who can run 30 minutes or more at any pace. Whatever pace you can run at there will be someone of a similar ability who will be able to run with you.

Our coach Steve will be leading our regular track session at Crystal Palace Athletics Arena (SE19 2BB) on Tuesday (starting 2 January, 7.00pm for 7.20pm) – see http://www.hernehill.org.uk/events/dulwich-runners-track-night-crystal-palace-athletics-arena for more details. Even though the event is on the track (normal running trainers are fine), all abilities find this focus on speed work really useful to improve their times and stamina for longer distances.

Then every Wednesday (starting 3 January, 7.15pm for 7.30pm) we have various group runs leaving our club house (the Edward Alleyn Club) on 83-85 Burbage Road, SE24 9HD from anything between 4 and 11 miles. Many of our runners then enjoy a hot or cold drink in the bar to discuss running or anything else that takes their fancy! See http://www.hernehill.org.uk/events/dulwich-runners-club-night for more details. We have free off road parking, changing facilities and showers.

Hopefully we will see some readers at some stage in the new year! And to whet your appetite here is a brief summary of what we got up to before Christmas.

Dulwich Runners took part in mixed South of Thames Cross Country races in Beckenham and Aldershot, Surrey Cross Country League races in Richmond and Sutton, helped with the pacing for the Brockwell parkrun anniversary run and enjoyed a great Christmas Party organised by our social reps Matt and Tom. As well as great drinks, food and music (courtesy of superstar DJs Tim and Ian) we also celebrated a successful year of running performances in our club championships and the Marathon in all female and male age groups from senior to veteran 60+.

Then a select bunch of runners managed to get up the next morning for our annual fancy dress “Turkey Trot” 3 lap handicap run around Dulwich Park where there were prizes for the best costume as well as first place.

Many of our runners have also taken part in parkrun events over Christmas and the New Year, including Christmas Day and New Years Day events at the likes of Brockwell Park, Dulwich Park and Peckham Rye. Many thanks to the volunteers who gave up their time to make those events possible and provided a good impetus to people’s running habits in the new year!
