This is horrific. I was there when it happened - though I can't be a witness as I didn't see it (I was 30 yards up the road on HH when I heard the crash behind me, police at the scene told me they don't need my evidence).

Myself and another woman ran back down and called emergency services - as did few others on the scene. Unfortunately for me, I had to look closely to see if she was conscious to tell the operator, and it was the most horrendous thing I've ever seen. I told them I think she's probably dead. I then asked people who were coming down the street to cross the road and not look to spare them the sight. We then tried to get cars moving to give the police and ambulances access.

I was in shock for the rest of the evening. Luckily I had family staying over so I wasn't alone with my children - my husband was away - which helped. On the street, people were saying it was a woman cyclist but reading now that the victim was a 12 years old is just awful. There was a group of girls on the pavement, they were screaming and in shock, I wonder if they were friends of her - I didn't talk to them.

The bus driver, a woman, was also in total shock. She was standing in the bus, by her seat, crying and shaking like a leaf. I don't what happened (as said I didn't see the crash, just heard it) but it looks like the girl must have appeared from nowhere - I did hear the screeching of the bus wheels and there was the smell of it.

Herne Hill (the street) has seen so many accidents over the years we've lived here. I don't know what else can be done to avoid them This is by far the worst one I've known. What else can be done so this doesn't happen again???

This poor girls family, I wasnt at home at the time but when I did get home about 8.00 the whole road was blocked off,  I was in total shock when my neighbour told me it was a 12yr old girl I havent stopped thinking about her or her family.

IrisM I hope you are coping okay.

Thanks, gia87  - I'm fine, but I definitely feel the shock still. I have young children and I think of the girls' parents. She must be local (when they thought it was a cyclist I remember thinking she's probably not local and just passing through).

It's just so horrible, I really don't know what else to say.
