The Future of our High Street
Public Meeting and A.G.M.
There is a special public meeting on April 24th devoted to the topic of the future of our high streets. It will also be our annual A.G.M.
7.00 p.m. Herne Hill Baptist Church, Half Moon Lane (corner of Half Moon Lane and Winterbrook)
Over the years the role of our high street within our local economy and neighbourhood has been undergoing major changes. Herne Hill has had a high number of independent traders many of whom have been here for decades.
Of late, there has been a high number of vacant properties, traders are worried about their future and Tesco is moving in to be alongside Sainsbury's. Will Herne Hill become another clone town or will the addition of the multiples help the local economy?
With the proposed redevelopment of the Half Moon Pub this may remove the major music venue that it has become and greatly affect the local area.
There will be Jackie Meldrum - deputy leader of Lambeth Council and cabinet member for regeneration, Liz Ablett - corporate affairs for Tesco, Fiona Colley and Alistair Huggett - Southwark Council, Luke Hilyard - Stop Tesco campaign, Emily Berwyn - Meanwhile Project, Therese Stowell - Local Greens. The aim of the meeting is to learn more about how high streets can be the lifeblood of a community and contribute to the local economy. We will be collating all the ideas and comments from the meeting to feed into an initial Local Neighbourhood Plan.
It will also be our AGM! This is the opportunity for you to get involved in all the activities we are up to in the coming year. There will be an election of the Herne Hill Forum Committee and officers (chair, vice chair, treasurer and secretary). We welcome nominations from anyone in the local area. If you wish to stand then please send in details of what position you wish to stand for along with details of your seconder. Email the details in here.
