BROCKWELL BOLD BRAVE THE COLD!
Brockwell Lido Community Cold Water Gala
Saturday 17thNovember 2018
On a beautiful sunny autumn day, Brockwell Lido hosted the 2018 Brockwell Lido Community Cold Water Gala - an event organised by BLU (Brockwell Lido Users) with the help of the local swimming community and Fusion. Lidos and swimming clubs across London were invited to race against two Brockwell Lido teams made up of swimmers from Brockwell Icicles, Streamline Swims, Windrush and non-affiliated lido swimmers.
Teams came from far and wide including GROSAX, Parliament Hill Lido, South London SC and Teddington Masters to compete in a series of races against Brockwell Lido, with the winning team being awarded the magnificent Brockwell Lido Cup. Many of the races were close, but the super strong Parliament Hill Lido team secured the cup by just 2 points, beating GROSAX into second place, with Brockwell Lido Blue team coming third (three cheers!!!).
After the team events came the individual races including 50m head up breaststroke, novelty hat and the most popular race of all; the 400m Endurance swim. Who knew there were so many Brockwell Lido Swimmers of all ages keen to swim 400m in water of 11.2 degrees!
With 100 swimmers this event wasn’t just about the elite demonstrating their prowess, it was a community event open to all, celebrating everyones swimming experience and a shared love for cold water swimming at Brockwell Lido. All participants were awarded a handsome engraved medal unique to the event.
An absolutely fantastic day with a wonderful atmosphere made possible by an army of volunteers (without whom these events could never take place) MC Cat Rowlands (who would give Clare Balding a run for her money) fantastic cake makers, DJ Amelia Starlight, wonderful raffle prizes, topped off by BLU’s Chair - CJ and Steffan Rhodri master-minding the BBQ providing sausages and burgers for the hungry enthusiastic swimmers and brilliant spectators.
Big thanks are due to Fusion’s Mark Munday & Liam Handley for providing two hot tubs and use of the Lido and its staff, all the local businesses who contributed raffle prizes, Brockwell Lido Café for hot drinks and toddies, the lifeguards who stayed on for extra time, Lauren (Operations & Duty Manager) Laura (Wet Ops Manager) and Venesha Lido Receptionist.
All proceeds raised on the day will be shared equally between two local charities: Mosaic Clubhouse and Wheels for Wellbeing.
