Boki's Hair pampers Herne Hill for charity
Much-loved Herne Hill salon Boki’s Hair donated half of its trade to help hairdressers facing life-changing illnesses on Friday 26 June, as part of a charity fundraising day.
The salon, located on Norwood Road, was the only hairdresser in South London to take part in the national day, organised by the Hair and Beauty Benevolent, and raised £500 for the worthy cause. The charity helps hairdressers and stylists across the UK who have fallen on hard times: suffering from illnesses like cancer or clinical depression, losing their businesses due to vandalism, or coping with children with long-term health problems.
Delighted customers were treated to champagne and balloons as they had their hair cut and styled, alongside free hand massages, courtesy of Slique Spa, and cupcakes, donated by Brixton Cake Shop.
Laura Kahane, 27, from West Dulwich said, ‘I was stunned when I arrived and was treated to a glass of champagne and a free hand massage! But I’m not surprised – Boki is one of the kindest guys you could meet, incredibly generous and he cares deeply about other people. I’ve been coming here for years and would recommend it to anyone – great service and top notch haircuts. I wish more businesses would get involved in this kind of thing, it’s so important to support each other, you never know when your life could be turned upside down.’
Boki’s Hair has been in Herne Hill for over 20 years, and owner Borjan Koprivica (Boki), has seen stylists fall on hard times.
He said, ‘I’m so pleased people came to support us on Friday, it was a really fun day! I jumped at the chance to do this as soon as I heard about it. Many years ago a fantastic colleague of mine was diagnosed with an incurable back problem, and after many months off sick, had to quit her job. She lost everything overnight, it was horrendous, and I felt totally helpless. If this charity had existed back then she could have been helped back into work. We are a community and need to look out for each other.’
The money raised will help hairdressers and their families who require specialist medical equipment, financial assistance with household bills, or skills and re-training to help people back into work.
Martin, 34, from Tulse Hill is one of the hairdressers who has been helped by the charity.
He says, 'I have been in the hairdressing industry for 12 years, it's my life. Everything came crashing down last year when I lost my parents in a road traffic accident. Although I have suffered with anxiety and depression before, I took a severe downturn, resulting in a total mental breakdown. I lost all my confidence, and struggled communicating with clients, which forced me to stop work. The charity has massively helped me re-build my confidence, get the hairdressing kit I need and assist with bills until I get back on my feet. I'm so grateful for their help and am thrilled to see local businesses getting involved – it has changed my life. '
Boki’s Hair is well regarded for its personal customer service and expertise in managing all different kinds of hair. In 2011 Borjan (Boki) was honoured with the distinguished title of Master Craftsman by the Hairdressing Council. The salon continually develops its skills, staying up-to-date with the latest techniques, products and fashions through regular in-house training sessions courtesy of the Vidal Sassoon Academy.
