Blue Plaque Votes in Southwark - Have Your Say!

The Grafton Dance School in Village Way is a local venue bidding for a blue plaque in Southwark Heritage Association's annual scheme - and up for the public vote.

The plaque will commemorate Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman, icons of the ballroom dancing world, who ran the venue for two decades and hosted many top dancers there, besides winning many awards themselves. The bid for a blue plaque for them has been supported by Len Goodman, former Strictly Come Dancing judge, who had lessons there with Burgess, and who said of them:

“Bob and Doreen were well-respected, world-famous dance teachers, they were former world ballroom champions and used to lecture and coach all over the world.

“There are many dance locations in the UK worthy of a blue plaque but none more so than the iconic Grafton.

“I sincerely hope it is successful in its bid to be awarded a blue plaque.” (source: Southwark News)
