indian restaurant?

Are there any indian restaurants, i.e. sit-down, in Herne Hill any more?

If not where is the closest that anyone would recommend, ideally walkable?

There was a cracking one on Croxted Road I went to not tooling ago, I'm afraid the name escapes me now... but the ones on Hernehill are no more. Is be interested to hear some reviews in the area.

Not to sure about ones you can walk to but if you can make your way to Lordship Lane theres plenty along there.  And for delivery Village Massala in Tulse Hill takes some beating.

It's a little towards Brixton, but Khans at the end of Brixton Water Lane (opposite the Hootenanny pub) does great Indian food, both sit-down and takeaway.

Khan's is excellent.

Khan's is a south London institution, highly reviewed and Herne Hill's closest good quality curry house. Doesn't look much from the outside but try you must. The specials from the smokey oven are a particular favorite. Highly recommended! They're currently No.5 on the Urbanspoon restaurant chart for the Brixton area and have always been in the top 10 since they were added a long time ago. Its an excellent source of local eaterie info with regular reviews.

If you'd like to go a bit further afield then consider the following. Just search for them. Your ruby awaits.

Brixton area: Curry Paradise, The Bengal Pavilion, Bombay Inn.

Dulwich area: Tandoori Nights, Omrith, Surma, Pistachio Club, Dulwich Tandoori, and Indigo.

Another plus with Khan's is they are BYO and I don't think they charge corkage.

Out of the Dulwich ones listed by iHeron I reckon Surma is the best. Again it has a long track record and many loyal patrons. A little further out of the way is Ganapati for South Indian cuisine - definitely worth a try and has won some awards  http://www.ganapatirestaurant.com/home.html

Ah, now then violetmatilla, South Indian is my current focus when it comes to Indian food. I'm a big fan of really good Dosa and travel to East Ham for my indulgence. Though, you can get very good Dosa a short bus ride away at Chennai Dosa at 33 Upper Tooting Road, Tooting Bec, SW17 7TR.

Much thanks for all the suggestions.  Will start at Khan's I think as certainly only a walk away.

As to the list I have in the past enjoyed a ruby at the Curry Cabin on Lordship Lane, E. Dulwich.

The Village Masaleh is good for a sit-down but I think that the best local Indian delivery service is Saffron, also in Tulse Hill. They say they are Nepalese rather than Indian but have all the dishes you would recognise like Tikka Masala, Biryani etc.

It is a shame that the Village Masaleh stopped the BYOB as it used to make it a cheaper night out to pick up a few bottles of Kingfisher in the shop next door.
