Herne Hill Music Festival
Herne Hill Music Festival 2014 programme - 10th to 19th of October
We're back for 2014 with new acts and a few new venues! The programme is almost complete and will feature perhaps our most ambitious project to-date: the staging of Bejamin Britten's community opera 'Noye's Fludde' on the final day of the Festival, Oct 19th. Topical community opera for a place severely affected by flooding last August where numerous businesses are still struggling to get going again.
The opera is based on the story of Noah’s Ark and on one of the Chester Miracle Plays written in the 14th century by ordinary people for performance by trades guild members and their families. It remains one of Britten's most engaging works as he also wrote it for amateurs, especially children, in order to enjoy planning, rehearsing, performing and generally making music together. It was also written to be performed in a church or a large hall - not in a theatre - and as such will be performed at St Faith's in Red Post Hill SE24 9JQ. This is a community outreach project and schools already involved include Bessemer Grange School, Rosendale School and JAGS http://www.jags.org.uk. Local musicians involved include the Calton Quartet.
We need to raise £1000 to match fund this community project, so please donate if you can through gogetfunding http://gogetfunding.com/project/noye-s-fludde or through our website at http://www.hernehillfestival.org. If you can't give, please share the news! Here's a clip from the opening of a 2008 Northern Lights Festival production of the opera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvqzM6SL_28
The opera is also featured in Wes Anderson's lovestory/fairytale feature film of 2012 'Moorise Kingdom'! It is at a production of Noyes' Fludde that Sam and Suzi, penpals who run off together, meet.
More 2014 Festival details on our website, our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram ... and here as well as we move closer to program completion as well as to finalisation of summer bandstand event schedule.
In the meantime, please donate to Noyes' Fludde ... or spread word if you can't. Should be quite an event!
