Community Exercise Classes
It is estimated that 1:3 people over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. In Southwark and Lambeth, this equates to 16,000 people. Research shows that strength and balance exercises can minimise the risk of falls and therefore the associated cost can be reduced. As well as secondary benefits, such as avoiding reduction in function, whilst maintaining independence and quality of life.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is offering a solution for the residents of Lambeth and Southwark to reduce, or prevent, the risk of falling. We run 29 FREE strength and balance exercise classes, lasting 30 weeks. Classes take place at a number of community venues across Southwark and Lambeth, such as Ferndale Sports Centre (Brixton), The Liberal Club (Peckham), Dulwich Library and Southwark Pensioner’s Centre (Camberwell). Our newest class will be held at Herne Hill Baptist Churchfrom the beginning of June.
Accessing our service is very easy and patients can self-refer by calling our Strength and Balance Helpline, 020 3049 5424. Our phone is manned 9:00 – 17:00 Monday – Friday and we reply to all voicemail messages as soon as possible. We accept referrals from relatives, carers, other healthcare professionals or those working in the voluntary sector on behalf of a patient. Once a telephone triage is completed, we will allocate patients to a class convenient to them.
