Calling all Railton Road residents

What do you think about the plans for the semi pedestrianised area?

Re: Calling all Railton Road residents

come on folks. I hear talk of a market happening - what do you people think? This Herne Hiller would certainly welcome a few fleas and some vintage tat down there of a weekend

Certainly.

As a NON-Railton Road resident, I feel this is a great move. I have filled in the online survey and look forward to further development of the area, and will definitely be visiting the market.

thinking the same. Was only wondering what it would be like to have a market on one's doorstep. Or outside one's actual shop. Have heard a vague rumour floating across the hill that there's some that aren't so keen...

That seems a shame. Although It's understandable. How many residential properties are in the immediate vicinity? It would be good to hear the residents opinions, as you say.

A Market is a nice idea but then you have to think about the local businesses in Herne Hill, the Grocers, Butchers, our flower lady, the cafes etc. I think we have a few shops selling, to quote, 'vintage tat', we dont want to be stepping on their toes .. admitedly it could also bring in custom for them but a good balance is needed ..

Agree - a market must not compete with what is already there (well, an eeeny bit of competition never hurts tho, does it?) but I for one could well do with something new going on in that space. I have chanced upon the W Norwood Feast in accidental stumblings down to B&Q of a weekend and liked what i saw... but is it just me (probably) but I can never remember when it's on?

I suppose all these acitivites will add nicely to the rubbish overflowing from bins and blowing in the breeze that adds so to the charm of the area.

Re: Calling all Railton Road residents

A monthly market sounds great ! There's a Vintage and Retro market every third saturday in the month on Station Road, and the West Norwood feast on another Saturday so it would probably be best to work round that. I would like a stall if it happens !

Re: Calling all Railton Road residents

I am a Railton Road resident and I live slap bang in the middle of what would be the market. Having just got a wonderful run of normal sleep (now that 4am Escape Bar is gone, and all other establishments being so wonderfully neighbour friendly, thank you all very much) I would only say that noise and rubbish would concern me a bit but, if it could be managed well, I would love the fun of a market out there. If it could be once a month and see how that goes it would be great? Herne hill is a fantastic place. We even have a street sweeper now so it doesnt feel like a tip all the time. I would love to see more plants and local businesses using the space. Making it TOTALLY PEDESTRIANISED would get my vote - this is an area with so many small children and prams. The current occasional car bombing through it is actually more dangerous as people often dont seem to realise it is still a road.  You can't take your eyes off the little ones for a second. Why is it still a road?

About the market – it’s in the draft contract that the company that runs the market has to leave the space cleaner than when they arrive.

The contract will also have start and end times for the market to be carefully monitored with a view to local residents. Stall holders will have to park as far away from the immediate area as possible. There will be a mix of stalls but mainly good quality food based, complementary to existing retailers and not in direct competition. For example any meat stall will be different from what’s currently available, eg organic or at a higher price point. We are very keen to support local shops, which are so important to Herne Hill. Local businesses will have first choice to be in the market. Evidence from other areas is that the extra visitors attracted to Herne Hill will benefit the great majority of existing shops and help the whole area to thrive.

We did a consultation in Railton Road in February and online to which 300 people responded, of which 91% want a market and 93% want food in the market. 10% usually travel to the shops by car.
